A growing community with access to all directions
The Brisbane suburb of Runcorn is located approx. 14 kilometres south east of the Brisbane CBD. It covers an approximate area of 6.5 squared kilometres and is surrounded by the neigh- bouring suburbs of Sunny- bank, Eight Mile Plains, Sunnybank Hills, Calamvale, Kuraby, and Stretton. Runcorn is bordered by Compton Road to the south and the Gateway Motorway to the east.
The majority of the western boundary runs along Gowan Road. Beenleigh Road cuts through the middle of the suburb. Originally, Runcorn was occupied by the Jagera Aboriginal people who occupied most of the land south of the Brisbane River.
Before Runcorn was declared its own suburb, it was a part of Coopers Plains which was designated as the Brisbane Agricultural Reserve. The suburb is said to get its name from one of the first families to settle in the area who named their farm Runcorn after Runcorn, Cheshire, England. During 1870, Runcorn had a lot of cotton farms and fruit and vegetable farms. There were also a few poultry and dairy farms. Because the majority of Runcorn was made up of farms, the suburb’s population remained quite small.
However, in 1880, a subdivision occurred which opened Runcorn Estate which offered both farms and town lots. Developments continued and notably, in 1885, the Beenleigh railway line opened with the Runcorn railway station servicing the suburb. A suburban estate called Runcorn Station Estate was sold in 1890 and it offered house lots in close proximity to the railway station. Even more developments happened including the opening of Runcorn State School in 1901, the construction of the Progress Hall in 1926, the connection of electricity in 1993, and more. All of this development subsequently led to a big increase in the suburb’s population, especially over the two decades between 1960 and 1980. There was another significant increase in population during the 2010s which has led to what the suburb is today.
